The Ministry of Health’s National Medical Research Council (NMRC) has awarded $60 million to three new research projects to support research efforts in the health and biomedical fields under the Open Fund-Large Collaborative Grants (OF-LCG) programme.

The OF-LCG grant call is made once a year, with the aim to support the efforts of the country’s research teams in advancing human health and wellness, as well as to create economic value for Singapore through the pursuit of excellence in research.

Clinician Innovator Award

In addition, the NMRC has set aside nearly $1.8 million for the pilot Clinician Innovator Award which will be launched in May 2018.

Aimed to encourage clinicians who are interested in developing new medical technologies or devices to improve healthcare, the scheme could fund up to eight Clinician Innovators over the next three years with seed funding of up to $100,000 over two years per award, as well as salary support for the clinicians’ protected research time.

With positive preliminary results, the clinicians can then apply for subsequent funding through the National Health Innovation Centre (NHIC)’s innovation grants for further commercialisation.

“With these grants, the NMRC hopes to translate the researchers' work into tangible products that can bring about both economic and healthcare benefits. Essentially, we want to move from an idea, to finding a product, to delivering it to our patients,” said NMRC chairman, K Ranga Rama Krishnan. MIMS
